Film production designers, art directors, and set decorators turn to Troubetzkoy because of their wide selection of pictorial subjects from any period in history and for their proven ability to quickly reproduce works of the highest quality. In addition, Troubetzkoy negotiates and organizes all licensing clearances, and all works are provided on a rental basis. For production designers interested in a general genre or period of art, but who are unfamiliar with, or unsure of, what specific works they need, Troubetzkoy will research and select pieces for their approval. Also, Troubetzkoy will work to fit the film budget and have different quality and price levels depending upon on-camera usage. Troubetzkoy is a proud sponsor of the Set Decorators Society of America.
The connection between Troubetzkoy Paintings Ltd and the film industry began in 1991, when production designer Dante Ferretti sought paintings for The Age of Innocence, Martin Scorceses period adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Edith Wharton. Known for his absolute commitment to authenticity, Mr. Ferretti sought the advice of Barbara Bridgers, of New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art, on the finest source for art reproduction. Ms. Bridgers recommended Troubetzkoy.
The firm was thus commissioned to recreate more than 200 works of art by European Orientalists, the Hudson River School, and Barbizon masters that were required for the production. The film, which starred Michelle Pfieffer and Daniel Day-Lewis, went on to garner Mr. Ferretti an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction. Since that time, Troubetzkoy has reproduced thousands of paintings for films, including the entire White House art collection seen in director Rob Reiners 1995 release, The American President. The most notable of the ten films for which artwork was provided in 1999 is the Pierce Brosnan/Rene Russo romantic thriller The Thomas Crown Affair. Troubetzkoy replicated an array of some 150 seventeenth- to twentieth-century masterpieces for this film.
